Tibetan Sacred Art Restoration Training - Retreat in Colorado
With Lama Gyurme Rabgye
August 16 - 20, 2022
*** 7.27.22 UPDATE- THIS RETREAT HAS BEEN CANCELLED***
Tara Mandala has the fortune that Lama Gyurme Rabgye has agreed to hold a Sacred Arts and Restoration Retreat on the land this summer. This program will provide an introductory training on Tibetan sacred art painting, using the beautiful Trikaya Temple as the focus. This program is the first of what we hope will lead to a multi-year master training apprentice training program that will be offered by Tara Mandala and Lama Gyurme by invitation.
Apprenticeship is a traditional, time-tested approach that has been used for centuries. The apprentice works with the master artist for several years until he has learned the techniques, materials and methods of art conservation. This is learned through practical, onsite experience. We hope this training will enable developing artists to gain the skills needed to support the protection and conservation of Tibetan sacred art at Tara Mandala and other dharma centers across the world.
This retreat will provide the introductory training and exploration of Tibetan sacred arts and symbolism associated with the temple. Techniques presented are based on Lama Gyurme’s training at the Mindroling Monastery under the tutelage of Lama Tsekyab, painter of the famous Korkym Monastery. This retreat will include:
- Painting style and techniques
- Use of mineral pigments, and paint mixing and preparation
- Symbolism present in the artwork and wood carvings
- Hands on experience with painting and restoring the artwork in the temple
- Depictions of deities, flowers, plant life, and animals and their meaning and positioning in Tibetan Art.
